It's not the fact I'm in a country I've never stepped foot in before. It's not the fact everyone around me has brown hair and brown eyes, making me look like the exotic foreigner with my very blond hair and very blue eyes. It's not the fact I can't understand a word anybody was saying, nor can I read any of the signs surrounding me. From the moment we walked… more

Damn. That Martine sure knows how to move his hips! I like to think of myself as a very uninhibited and confident dancer. But during the salsa lesson we filmed tonight, I found keeping up with the 5'2" Guatemalan dancing machine quite the challenge. There we were, all lit up and on camera in the middle of a popular Antiguan club, trying to look natural while Martine marched us through a… more

My favorite meal of the day is breakfast. So I feel well-qualified in declaring that Guatemalan cafes have the best breakfast food in the world. The entire world, you ask? What about Belgium? What about their famous waffles? Or Benedict Land where eggs benedict come from? Surly, a tiny country at the top of Central America can't claim to have the best meals of the morning out of every country… more

A trip to a world-famous lake like Atitlan conjures up images of sun bathing, hammock swinging and sailing around in circles just for the fun of it. Our visit couldn't have been more different. Instead of indulging ourselves in any resort-reserved hot rock rub downs, each of the Wayfinder cast members was given a challenge to be completed by the end of the day: go out and produce our very own… more

Waking up at 3:30 a.m. sucks, no matter where you are. Waking up at 3:30 a.m. to trudge out of your warm hotel, and into the cold, uninviting and pitch-black morning so you can watch one of the most famous open-air markets in Central America come to life also sucks, but only because I'm not a morning person. Besides, when's the next time I'm ever going to be in Chichicastenango… more

I don't think I ever fully appreciated what a wonderful invention the tent is until this trip. Tents are amazing! They come in all sorts of different colors. They fold up into little bags that you can carry. And best of all, they can keep you from freezing to death when you're camping out on the top of a volcano in Guatemala. Me without a tent. I'm writing today's blog entry a day… more

If I was pitching a movie about this morning's hike up Pacaya, it would be called, "Erin vs. Herself vs. The Volcano." Because not only did I have to keep up with the rest of the Wayfinders and scale a lava-filled mountain, I also had to make sure my own clumsiness didn't kill me along the way. Trying not to trip. The walk from our campsite to the crater surrounding Pacaya was… more

Sebastian. He's my homie. My boy. My wingman in my "entourage" here in Guatemala. And he's only 5-years-old. We just flew into the country a few hours ago, and already I'm assembling my posse. After getting our stuff straight at the Guatemala City airport, we drove directly to Antigua where the first order of business was to eat. Erin and Autumn just love talking on the bus. And eat, we did. We ended… more

Ever pray to a moustachioed cowboy? Ever been smacked across the face with a bundle of wet Guatemalan grass and herbs? I bet you haven't. It's just not the type of thing that happens to most people, let alone most tourists who visit Guatemala. Well, it happened to me today. And it felt surprisingly good. We visited a town outside of Antigua called San Andres. That's where a shrine is located dedicated… more

I GOT TO WEAR THE HELMET CAM WHILE BIKING DOWN A GUATEMALAN VOLCANO TODAY!! See? Not trying to brag. Just typing out the facts in all capital letters in case any of you all have an astigmatism or some other eye affliction that keeps you from visually absorbing the vital details of this blog. That's all. Just trying to be of service to the less fortunate blog readers of the world. So, like… more

A "fellow filmmaker" (ha!) like Quentin Tarantino would have been proud of all of the real-life blood and guts I got on film today. It was ingloriously disgusting. I got all up to my elbows in entrails, intestines and other goopy cow innards, and I loved every second of it.   But the day sure didn't start out on such a high note. When the Wayfinder crew first informed us this morning… more

Volcano Pacaya, how do I describe thee? First off, you have a funny name for a volcano: Pacaya. Sounds like "papaya." Makes me think more of a tropical fruit than a big, bad mountain top that's filled with red hot lava. Also, I think you cover yourself up with too many clouds, Pacaya. Half the time I looked at you, I couldn't see your peak because there was a thick… more

First day here in Guatemala, and I already feel like I'm adapting to this new-to-me culture. I mean, I haven't started speaking Spanish yet. I haven't started wearing one of those amazingly beautiful Mayan dresses the women here wear that make them look like walking rainbows. And I couldn't tell you who the president of Guatemala is. But I can say I've jammed out with a couple of real-life Antiguans. And… more

You can't go to Guatemala without getting a taste of the culture. However, you can go to Guatemala and get a taste of a whole lot of other things, too. In the past 24 hours, I have sampled the Guatemalan version of Kentucky Fried Chicken (meh), a warm banana smoothie (yuck!), and‚ oh yeah!‚ holy water spit directly at my face from a shaman's mouth (double yuck?). When the Wayfinder crew… more

How does a single Wayfinder make compelling TV about meditation in Guatemala? That's what I set out today to discover in our first Wayfinder.tv solo challenge. Last night, the crew told us we each had to go out on our own and come up with a story to film in one of the towns around Lake Atitlan. So, this morning, some of the crew members and I hopped in a water… more

I think all of the non-stop activity is finally catching up to me. This morning, we woke up in what has to be one of the world's most beautiful hotels, and for that very reason, the only thing I felt inspired to do was lounge around on one of Casa del Mundo's sun-drenched balconies after scarfing down my big, fat, delicious breakfast.   Seriously. I've never stayed anywhere like this place. Casa… more

As predicted in yesterday's blog, I awoke this morning at 3:30 a.m., completely unrefreshed and bleary-eyed in Chichicastenango. But the producers insisted we get an "early start" today, filming the largest open-air market in Central America come to life. And so we did. Learning how to make tortillas in Chichi. But just to be fair, I think some of the other cast members did a better job than I could writing about… more

I think our trip to Volcano Pacaya was instant karmic payback for my paragliding adventure at Lake Atitlan. Paragliding was absolutely simple and effortless; all I had to do was jump off a giant rock and let the wind carry me to the ground. Climbing a volcano is a much different experience. First off, I vomited on the trek up to our campsite. Not a lot. But not a little. Just… more
